The Welcome email is sent to the customer upon the creation of a new account. It is also referred to as the Create Account or New Signup email message.
The store owner can also elect to have a copy of the email sent to one or more addresses for notification.

This reminds me, I really need to finish customising my zen cart emails. It’s something that is easy to forget about but it really is important in order to make the right impression.

I agree Arias, the Zen Cart transactional emails are so easy to forget when you are so focussed on customising the store pages themselves!
