You’ve put a lot of effort into writing the content for your online store – from product descriptions to frequently asked questions about shipping and everything in between. This content says a lot about you and your store. Errors diminish your credibility. Bad links cause visitors to leave. Typos convey a slap-dash attitude. People notice mistakes and seemingly small errors can make your store look unreliable and unprofessional.

I’m sure you all know this already, but consider this a gentle reminder as we review a couple of simple steps to help you provide a superior user experience that will help attract a loyal audience to your online store.

Proofread – at least twice

Proofreading is a simple, yet vital, step before publishing because:

Content free from errors keeps your visitors focused on your message and delivers a smooth user experience
The effect of errors in your content on your store visitors can range from being mildly distracting to completely derailing their train of thought. The errors become the focus rather than your content’s message.

Content free from errors underscores your store’s credibility
Research, as part of the Stanford University Web Credibility Research project, has shown that web users do not just overlook simple cosmetic mistakes such as spelling or grammatical errors. In fact, the findings suggest that typos can have roughly the same negative impact on a website’s credibility as a company’s legal or financial troubles.

To help prevent overlooking something in your proofreading step, try this checklist:

Check the most visible elements
There are a few ‘hotspots’ on a web page that people are most likely to read. Give these areas some special attention when proofreading:
- the webpage title
- headlines and headings
- menu items and button text
- link text
- brand, site and product names

Check the formatting
If you tend to write content in a word processing program before copying to your store pages, pay particular attention to issues such as:
- missing punctuation at the end of a paragraph (caused by hasty copying and pasting)
- mismatched fonts (a paragraph appearing in Times New Roman when the rest of the page is in Arial)
- special characters not rendering properly (such as smart quotes, apostrophes, etc being turned into ‘garbage text’

Check for potential legal issues
Look out for any incorrect usage of brand names and trademarks. Also ensure that the use of other people’s photos, videos, artwork and text are compliant with the appropriate copyright laws.

Check for consistency and accuracy
Double check the spelling of all names of people and places. Are you consistent in the way you have spelled and capitalized words. Something in this area that I always need to keep an eye on is being consistent in the spelling of words such as color/colour or customization/customisation.Are you consistent in the names of site elements (such as buttons, menus, links, etc) across your store? For example, do your instructions mention clicking on the ‘Sign Up’ button but the button label is ‘Subscribe’. Or ‘Registration’ in one place and ‘Create Account’ in another.

Check spelling, grammar and punctuation
Potential areas for mistakes in this cateogry include commonly misspelled words (for example – independent, maintenance, occurrence), commonly misused words (like affect/effect, complimentary/complementary, there/their/they’re, your/you’re) and common grammar traps (such as mismatching the subject and verb – we goes to school).

Check images and video
Always check that the text accompanying an image or video makes sense. It’s can be easy to miss this if you update an image down the track. Also, double check the alt text for each image.

Check readability
If a visitor to your store only skims the page, will they know what the page is about? Do you have the most important information in the first paragraph. Look at ways you can create ‘easy to scan’ text such as breaking up paragraphs with sub-headings, converting long sentences to bulleted points.

Proofreading Tips

Print the page – reading on the screen and reading on paper IS different. Printing out the page means you’ll see the page and the words differently and is a great tactic for spotting errors.

Wait – sometimes you will find yourself reading what it is supposed to say rather than what it actually says. A break can help you see your text with new eyes.

Ask someone else – if you are too familiar with the content. A new reader will be more likely to see mistakes and point out anything confusing. Having a second proofreader is one of the best ways to clarify and correct your content.

It is easy to get caught up in focussing on bringing new visitors to your store. However, it really is more important to focus on the visitors that you have now and what you can do to increase the ratio of visitors that convert to being customers. This is not to discount the importance of promoting and marketing your online store, but sales is the name of the game – not visitor numbers.

At the end of the day your site visitors need to feel confidence in handing over their money to you. So, let’s have a look at the top ten design factors influencing site credibility from Stanford University’s Web Credibility Research project.

Make it easy to verify the accuracy of the information on your site.

You can build web site credibility by providing third-party support (citations, references, source material) for information you present, especially if you link to this evidence. Even if people don’t follow these links, you’ve shown confidence in your material.

Show that there’s a real organization behind your site.

Showing that your web site is for a legitimate organisation will boost the site’s credibility. The easiest way to do this is by listing a physical address. Other features can also help, such as posting a photo of your offices or listing a membership with the chamber of commerce.

Highlight the expertise in your organisation and in the content and services you provide.

Do you have experts on your team? Are your contributors or service providers authorities? Be sure to give their credentials. Are you affiliated with a respected organization? Make that clear. Conversely, don’t link to outside sites that are not credible. Your site becomes less credible by association.

Show that honest and trustworthy people stand behind your site.

The first part of this guideline is to show there are real people behind the site and in the organisation. Next, find a way to convey their trustworthiness through images or text. For example, some sites post employee bios that tell about family or hobbies.

Make it easy to contact you.

A simple way to boost your site’s credibility is by making your contact information clear: phone number, physical address, and email address.

Design your site so it looks professional (or is appropriate for your purpose).

We find that people quickly evaluate a site by visual design alone. When designing your site, pay attention to layout, typography, images, consistency issues, and more. Of course, not all sites gain credibility by looking like IBM.com. The visual design should match the site’s purpose.

Make your site easy to use — and useful.

We’re squeezing two guidelines into one here. Our research shows that sites win credibility points by being both easy to use and useful. Some site operators forget about users when they cater to their own company’s ego or try to show the dazzling things they can do with web technology.

Update your site’s content often (at least show it’s been reviewed recently).

People assign more credibility to sites that show they have been recently updated or reviewed.

Use restraint with any promotional content (e.g., ads, offers).

If possible, avoid having ads on your site. If you must have ads, clearly distinguish the sponsored content from your own. Avoid pop-up ads, unless you don’t mind annoying users and losing credibility. As for writing style, try to be clear, direct, and sincere.

Avoid errors of all types, no matter how small they seem.

Typographical errors and broken links hurt a site’s credibility more than most people imagine. It’s also important to keep your site up and running.

A category in Zen Cart can have either products or sub-categories. Where you have a category within a category, we refer to these as sub-categories. Sub-categories are displayed at the top of a category page and include an image and a text link. If you have custom images that include the sub-category name, the text link is redundant and you will probably want to remove it. Here is an example of how the sub-category images and text links are displayed.

There are two methods for achieving the same thing – removing the sub-category text link - either by modifying the relevant code in your template’s override folder (this removes the text and link completely) or by modifying your template’s stylesheet (this effectively just hides the text and link). We’re going to have a look at both methods here.

Method 1 – Modify module code

Open the category_row.php file located in the /includes/modules directory.

Find this section of code:

$list_box_contents[$row][$col] = array('params' => 'class="categoryListBoxContents"' . ' ' . 'style="width:' . $col_width . '%;"','text' => '<a href="' . zen_href_link(FILENAME_DEFAULT, $cPath_new) . '">' . zen_image(DIR_WS_IMAGES . $categories->fields['categories_image'], $categories->fields['categories_name'], SUBCATEGORY_IMAGE_WIDTH, SUBCATEGORY_IMAGE_HEIGHT) . '<br />' . $categories->fields['categories_name'] . '</a>');

and replace with this:

$list_box_contents[$row][$col] = array('params' => 'class="categoryListBoxContents"' . ' ' . 'style="width:' . $col_width . '%;"',  'text' => '<a href="' . zen_href_link(FILENAME_DEFAULT, $cPath_new) . '">' . zen_image(DIR_WS_IMAGES . $categories->fields['categories_image'], $categories->fields['categories_name'], SUBCATEGORY_IMAGE_WIDTH, SUBCATEGORY_IMAGE_HEIGHT) . '<br /></a>');

Save the modified category_row.php file to your override folder. This will be /includes/modules/CUSTOM/ where CUSTOM represents the name of your current template folder.

Method 2 – Modify stylesheet

Open the stylesheet.css file located in the /includes/templates/CUSTOM/css directory, where CUSTOM represents the name of your current template folder.

Add the following to the bottom of the file:

.categoryListBoxContents a {visibility:hidden;}.categoryListBoxContents a img{visibility:visible;}

Save the modified stylesheet.css file.

And that’s it! The page looks much cleaner and more professional now.

There are lots of elements in this design that I love, but in particular I am very impressed with the design and layout of the shopping cart page. The effective use of the ‘screen real estate’ in the header and footer sections is also very well done.

The Simply Kerrin Zen Cart template has been designed with a fluid width of 90%. This means that the width of the store front will grow (or shrink) depending on the size and resolution of the monitor that your customers are using to view your store.

With large, wide screen monitors being far more affordable today, many of your customers may be looking at a version of your store that is just too wide for comfortable viewing and reading. Here we are going to show how to change this template to a fixed width (in pixels) using the CSS file.

To change the Simply Kerrin Zen Cart template to a fixed width design:

Open the stylesheet.css file located in the /includes/templates/simply_kerrin/css/ directory.

Find this section of code:

#mainWrapper {
    text-align: left;
    width: 90%;
    vertical-align: top;
    border-bottom: 1px solid #677f39;
    }

and modify the width as required (A width of 1000px would suit most stores):

#mainWrapper {
    text-align: left;
    width: 1000px;
    vertical-align: top;
    border-bottom: 1px solid #677f39;
    }

Save the modified stylesheet.css file to the same folder, ie the /includes/templates/simply_kerrin/css/ folder.

A how-to guide for one of your products is a very effective post for your online store blog. So effective in so many ways, such as:

High quality, unique content that is likely to rank well for your keywords

Opportunity for deep links to your product pages

Enticing readers to click through to your online store, as in the example below from Sara’s Soaps ‘n Such

Helping and educating your readers in the use of your product so that they feel comfortable enough to make a purchase

Highlight your knowledge and expertise as the go-to person in your field.

And don’t think that how-to guides only suit some types of products. You might be surprised at the information that readers are searching for.

If you haven’t already done so, pick out a few of your best selling products and write a how-to guide for each one. These types of blog posts are very popular and are particularly good content for search engines.

Do you already use how-to guides on your store blog? Share a link to one of your favorite posts or let us know how your customers respond to your how-to guide posts in the comments below.
